Frugal design for the bottom of the pyramid
The project was done for a rural / tribal setting with low or no access to electricity. Households in these areas face severe difficulties in daily activities due to lack of basic facilities. The lack of electrification and a stable electrical supply compounds the issue especially for children. Studying after sundown is almost impossible, and getting battery powered illumination is too expensive.
This low cost solar power lamp was designed to be handy, multi utility and durable. This enabled the users to be active and study / complete their tasks even after sundown. Cost of the product is 200INR, and the manufacturing is also local, involving small scale mini setups spread across the local area. My role was to provide concept design, CAD and product detailing. Product currently in the market. Project in association with Zealous design.
